are infused into delicious Tarquin’s Cornish Gin. The result is reminiscent of blackberry crumble and really is like a mouthful of an English Summer.

Our new reserve collection consists of five gins, hand-picked by the Sub 13 management. This one is the choice of director Tim Whelehan, who says: “I come from a family of committed gin drinkers, and this wonderful gin is resplendent with the berry fruit and summer aromas reminiscent of my childhood in the rural west county”.

Something from the garden

The heart of this summer special is Tarquin’s Cornish Gin. Hand made in Cornwall by master-distiller Tarquin it is made unique by the addition handpicked Devon violets to the botanical mixture of juniper, coriander seed, orange, lemon and grapefruit zests. Earthy notes come from the use angelica, orris, cardamom, bitter almond and liquorice.

Tarquin says: “One unusual ingredient is the Devon violet. From these I take the delicate leaves, which add a vibrant green freshness to the gin and create something deliciously unique.”.

A labour of love
Testing Tarquin's Gin production

The distillation process really is a labour of love – each batch is tested

Tarquin produces the gin in small batches and uses a flame-fired copper pot still. He chooses the botanicals by hand, going on their flavour and then oversees each distillation manually. This hands-on approach even extends to the bottling and labelling, with Tarquin sealing each bottle with its distinctive wax and numbering it by hand, then each bottle then gets his signature to prove it’s the real deal.

This approach might sound full on, but it clearly works. Tarquin’s is a double gold-medal winner, at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2014.

The gin is light and fresh with lots of leafy notes, a hint of orange and cardamom on the nose and a crisp finish.

Back to the blackberry

We serve Tarquin’s with lemon tonic and a hint of honey on our new reserve gin collection. Garnishes include cinnamon, flamed lemon and blackberries. Cheers!
