As part of Bath’s annual festival of food, the Great Bath Feast, we were very pleased to be invited to host the Bath Bartender of the Year Competition. Having been serving cocktails in Bath for 14 years, we have seen the cocktail scene change radically, and we now have a thriving community of bartenders in the city. We are really looking forward to hosting this competition and being part of the Great Bath Feast celebrations. And we are pleased to be working with William Grant and Sons, the producers of Hendricks, whose products will be featuring in the competition.

The Bath Bartender of the Year Competition
Reyka vodka in a field

Competitors will need to include Reyka vodka in their signature cocktail, which will be judged by the Reyka international brand ambassador Fabiano Latham

The Bath Bartender of the Year final will take place at Sub 13 on Sunday 8th October at 4pm. It will be open to the public and so cocktail fanatics will be able to witness the creation of some really inventive concoctions live. As well as witness some of the friendly rivalry that will no doubt ensue.

The format

To compete, the hopeful mixologists will need to come up with a signature cocktail that represents their personal history and connection with Bath. They will need to include 35ml of Reyka vodka in their creation, and on the day give a six minute presentation to explain their choice. It will be judged by Fabiano Latham the UK brand ambassador for Reyka vodka, alongside Greg Williams from the Bristol Syrup Company, last year’s winner Victoria Clemente and our own Bella Newman.

Sour cocktail at sub 13

Participants will need to make their own twist on a classic cocktail – drawn from a hat.

From the entries, ten of the best will be invited to compete on the day, when they will need to make their signature drink and give their presentation. They will then be asked to make their own twist on a sour using either Disaronno or Hudson Baby Bourbon. Finally, contestants will draw a classic cocktail from the hat, and not only make it but also give some history and why their twist is relevant to them. The classics that will be in the hat are: Pina Colada, Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Negroni, Daiquiri, Moscow Mule, Espresso Martini, The Last Word, Zombie and Bramble. For the classics round contestants will judge each other.

The prizes

The winner will take home a £250 voucher for Independent Spirit of Bath, two bottles of spirit and the coveted Bath Bartender of the Year Trophy. The second place bartender will get two bottles of spirit and the third place will get one bottle.

How to enter

If you are a Bath bartender and you would like to take part just send a copy of your signature drink recipe to bella@sub13.net no later than midnight on 22nd September, stating your name, bar name, cocktail name, ingredients (specifying the recipe of any home-made ingredients) and the story behind your cocktail.
